Do you remember this quilt in progress? Well, it is now finished. For about 15 years, all my sewing, lace making, embroidering was done on a BROTHER machine. About a year ago, I purchased my dream machine, BERNINA 830 and boy what a learning curve it has turned out to be. There are days when I doubt my decision to change machine makers. I persevere as the reason I purchased this machine is because of the free motion quilting capability. This quilt was made from PFD fabric cut into 10 inch blocks that art students at Nazareth Academy High School (daughters' Alma mater) painted using procion dyes. They drew the flowers onto the block using a resist and using dyes painted in the colors. After ironing the blocks to remove all the resist, I machine stitched the blocks together and used a purchased batik for the backing. This is my first attempt in free motion quilting. While I'm not an expert, I think I'm better for the experience.

You know, we meet and make so many friends blogging. It always amazes me how much we can learn about one another through online contact. For instance, my good friend, Marilyn sent me this simply gorgeous Raw Silk. She knows I love silk and PURPLE is certainly a favorite color and the GOLD makes a striking contrast. Included in the gift package is a pattern AND a brand new rotary blade because it is always good to cut silks using nice sharp blades! Thank you very much Marilyn. You are a real sweetheart and your gift was right on time AND I feel truly blessed that you thought of me!!!

Off and on during the past year, I've been working on a bird block for a friend. Thank you for your patience, my friend...I think you are probably so disappointed in me by now; however, I really am working to finish this block. Yes, I could have purchased a ready made pattern but I wanted this to be an original designed block. I like the drawing that resulted from hours of learning to draw a bird....still, I don't claim to be an artist...lol.

I've been drooling over solid fabrics for some time now and would you believe that in a extensive stash (mine), there just wasn't any. In January, I discovered PINK CHALK FABRICs, an extraordinary online fabric shop. If you haven't visited this site, you simply must. The fabric is divine and customer service is "top notch"!!!!

Joining the monthly fabric club was a no brainer for me...each month they mail out a group of 1/2 yard cuts in some lovely, luscious fabrics. They are a mix of Kona and Free Spirit fabrics.... YUMMEEEEEEE! I LOVE FABRIC!!!

Jenny of Elefantz is hosting a 12 month book challenge making quilts from this wonderful quilting book QUILTING FROM LITTLE THINGS by Sarah Fielke. The book is full of wonderful quilts both mini and large with great instructions and various techniques to make them. The book is available at Amazon.com but is shipped from London, England. So the book was about 2 weeks arriving. Jenny started in May with the mini pattern "Diamond Chips". You can see her mini quilt here. June's project is "Rebel with a Rotary"; Jenny's quilt is here (scroll down to about middle page). I'm hoping to show some progress by month's end. Here's a picture of my latest fiber manipulation! For the past eight years, I made my daughters' prom gowns. One is now a college grad and one is in college and to tell the truth, I miss all the fuss of searching for that perfect shade of silk or biting my nails wondering if the fabric will arrive in time! This year I made my son's vests, ties, and hankies. This black and white, made from shantung silk front/black back was for this past Saturday's affair.

His vest, tie, and hankie are the perfect match for the lovely young lady's beautiful gown!

C-R-A-F-T yahoo group (owned by a lovely Australian lady - Khristina) is a wonderful group of warm-hearted, chatty ladies and whenever one of us is hurting, we all hurt. So when the devastation of the recent flooding affected some of our members, naturally, I wanted to do whatever I could to help out.

In January, widespread flooding occurred in Queensland, NSW, and Victoria Australia. Some members were affected by loss of property and others - a great deal of property damage. One of the ladies has lost family members. I continue to pray for those who are in need...

These heart blocks were made to be included in quilts for several members quilts....

Latest heart blocks made for a young lady who, although 8 months pregnant with her son, was rushed into the ER for her son's early delivery and a life-saving heart operation. I'm happy to report that mother and son are doing well.

Sarah is the daughter of Deb and Jeff Karasik. Members of her yahoo group were asked to make heart blocks from one of her heart block designs! The blocks are all made of batik fabrics and are of many varying colors. Deb will put them together for a wonderfully colorful batik quilt.

Meanwhile here is my story...
In 1997, a friend of mind dragged me to a LQS for guild night and insisted that I bring a couple of the vests that I had been making and selling. Reluctantly, I complied with her wishes...see, sewing stores were my favorite places..."quilt" shops; were different animal altogether. After the guild meeting, one of the older ladies came over to me and asked me if I intended on making a larger quilt. My reply was quilting wasn't actually in my future. She laughed at me and pointed out that I had been making quilts all along. The fronts of the vest and the handbags were made from small quilted pieces that I embellished with buttons; shells; ribbons, threads and whatever else!! I just didn't consider them quilts. So I was persuaded right then and there to sign up for a quilting class. All around me on the walls of the shop were quilts that were taught in classes. The most striking quilt was one called "Amish Rainbow". I loved the colors and simple design. lol... I gathered the beautiful solid colored fabric in addition to the black background fabric; attended the all day class. At the end of the 6 hour class, I hadn't made one block ... so, confused and in tears, I saught out the teacher for some extra help. She told me to come back the next day. Within 15 minutes of arriving, I had my stuff packed up and on my way back home to make my quilt. It took 22 hours over the next few days to complete the quilt top! Victoriously I marched into the shop a couple weeks later to show off my quilt. The teacher was delighted and when I thanked her for helping to make my first quilt, she was shocked (as were the other folks there). Had she known it was my first endeavor, she would have recommended a simpler pattern. Well folks, if no one tells you cannot do a thing, that a pattern is above your ability, you will just go along and make those first steps unaware that you are not starting at the beginning... I learned that making this quilt. It was also my first foray using the rotary cutter and rulers and such! I've been making quilts since then. I love this first quilt! What do you think?

My FIRST Quilt!

It was 1997 and I was showing off some of my vest. The occassion was a quilt shop Friday show and tell; so the only things I was sewing at the time was clothing. I made quilted and ribbon/thread topstitched and sometimes densely decorated with buttons/beads and whatever else I could get on those pieces of fabrics - but only made enough to make into vest fronts and/or purses. One of the older members asked me if I was interested in joining the quilt guild and I replied that I really didn't have time to quilt. She laughed at me (and the puzzled look on my face) and explained that all this time, making quilts is exactly what I had been doing. So I signed up for a class called "Amish Rainbow". The solid color Kona cottons combined with the beautiful pure black Kona cotton really caught my eye and of course I wanted to buy the quilt...why buy asked the designer...you can make it in class. So I went about choosing the fabrics and did my homework; attended class and at the end of 8 hours, hadn't made one complete block. I didn't know anything about log cabin blocks or shoo-fly blocks or how they went together. I was very sad, almost to tears and went to talk to the teacher/designer and she told me if I had time, come back the next day and she would show me again. Sunday found me back at the shop (40 miles from home) and after 15 minutes of instruction, I had it! The light bulb went on! I returned home, took care of my babies. After they were sound asleep, I sewed. Over the next two days, every moment that I could sew, I did so. lol... I kept a careful record of the time spent making this top and it took 22 hours to completely piece the top. I was proud of myself and was able to show the designer my handiwork; she looked at it, told me what a good job I'd done. I thanked her for helping me to make my very first quilt. She was astounded! Everyone thought it some kind of miracle that I actually was able to finish the quilt. I'm guessing it was pretty complicated...but you see, no one told me that! lol...let that be a lesson - never tell anyone that a certain pattern or project is above their comprehension or skill level. Where there is the will...well, you know!
A couple months ago, a friend of mind - longarmer, quilted it for me! I love it...the colors are beautiful and with its warm and natural batting (wadding), will be nice and toasty on those cold winter nights!!!
Now, to locate that pattern. I want to make another one!

Of course my dd's favorite colors are purple and lime green; so we changed the name to "PURPLE CRUSH". While visiting her dorm yesterday, I couldn't resist taking a picture of it. We both love the results and she reports that it is just soooooo yummy!

QUILT AS YOU GO EXPERIMENT!

Sewing with online friends is fun - except this weekend, "life" has gotten in my way. Inspite of that, I did manage to get 12 of 16 blocks sewn. I used Moda "Sock Monkey" jelly roll (from stash) and a backing fabric, also from stash. Having strips already cut out is really nice and convenient! lol... YIKES! the jelly roll doesn't have enough to make all the blocks!!! So, I will search for more "monkey" fabric! Meanwhile, here is a pic of the progress so far.

Yesterday, I hopped onto this blog and Amy ... there's some kind of conspiracy going on, giggle ... keep running into Amys. Anyhoo, she is making hexagon blocks and wasn't happy because the finished block didn't lay flat. I've made these blocks in the past and had a couple suggestions...but, thought it better to actually make the block to be sure my suggestions work...lol. Here are some pictures of that effort. HEY! now, the fabric is calling to me ... MAKE MORE! lol, maybe I will!

I cut 2 strips of fabric and sewed them together and then cut 6 triangles using a 60 degree triangle...

measuring 1/4 inch

cut it off...lol, the 1/4 inch tip!

(note) the triangle ruler can be placed during cutting the triangles so that this cutting off the tip is eliminated! Just showed this step in the event you just have some triangles laying around, waiting to be used in a hexagon block. Eliminating the tips also helps the triangles to lay flat.

I like to sew 3 triangles together and then join the two sets! Boy this is a pretty good-looking block!

Here is a picture of the back of the block; I press all seams open as it really helps the block to lay flat... trust me, it works!!!

Phewwwww! ... been very unwell, but did manage to create through that. The one constant that has been in my life is making or manipulating fabrics and making "stuff"; this since a very young child. I'm no great artist but I love working with fabric. So this past week the second quilt's week 4 blocks were completed.

If you are reading this blog on a regular basis, you see quite a bit of Amy here. It's no coincidence as she is probably the single most inspirational and guiding light in my quilting life right now. We all gather inspiration from all sorts of sources. Amy has another great idea for those of us who have baskets of unfinished projects (UFOs). One of my favorite bloggers and designers is Jenny of Elefantz, an Australian stitch artist. Well she designs some of the most beautiful stitchery quilts! Last week I downloaded Jenny's small bird design and made a note book cover after reading her daughter's tutorial. Yep, looks like daughter is as talented as her mother! I combined the notebook cover and stitchery design into one project and here are pictures of my notebook cover. Thank you ladies for the inspiration!

...my two year old ganddaughter or maybe her Mom needs a quilt! I'm not sure who will grab this quilt and want to love it up! lol... Amy's sample quilt along is easy so far, so here is a pic of the first four blocks using some "CAT" fabs!

I really enjoy color and so...color this quilt really loud!!! Actually what you see here are the colors...maybe there's not enough colors...I think I left out orange! lol...

More fabric manipulations - this time with some Kaffe Fassett Striped fabrics...By themselves they are just plain yummy! What will this be? Lot's more are needed to make a quilt! I'm thinking small project...hmmmmmm...

Here are the blocks on point...just love on point quilts and these wheels still appear to be whirling...

Or maybe they should be like this...I love the way the light colored stiped fabrics appear to dominate the darker pinwheels here...hmmmmm, which shall it be?

Finally I've completed my Snails' Trail block for the 2010 Quilt block RR! I love them! This is the beginning of a "Shakespeare in the Park" quilt - pattern by Judy Martin. I have to get busy and make the star blocks...wheww, this (like most quilts) will be a long process. I'm glad that the ladies in this group will be helping me make these blocks. I look forward to seeing all the lovely colors and fabrics! Meanwhile, these blocks are made from Kona black cotton and batiks and asian prints.

Amy has done it again!!! She is hosting the third Bloggers' Quilt Festival....to date almost 400 bloggers have posted pictures of their wonderful quilts!!! I love this! Thanks Amy for giving us a venue to display our work!

This quilt is the second trial of a pattern that I made using my EQ5 program. Through this program, I was able to design the quilt and set up a step by step "teaching" pattern to make this quilt. Then the quilt and the pattern were posted in my favorite fabric shop; alas, not enough people signed up! I'm not sure why exactly, perhaps there were just soooo many beautiful quilts competing for a very limited teacher spots. Anyhoo, this is a favorite of mind and without further ado....here is my "Not Just Pinwheels 2" ...

Puzzle?

3 Creative Studios is hosting a year long quilt challenge; every two months, we are given a word and we are to follow instructions and make our creations. In January, the word given was PUZZLE. In late January, while sitting in Mock Trial court (with son's school), I made a rough drawing of a puzzle. Since then and yesterday, LIFE got in the way and no progress was made. Well, since we have a week to post our finished piece, this queen of the last minute, will attempt to finish it up and post the finish before the deadline...oiy vey! Here are pictures of the start....

Here the design has been drawn and colored and then cut apart! It is now a puzzle for me to put together; hope I can finish this puzzle on time! Yikes! if at all...lol!

QUILTY SURPRISE * HEALING HEART QUILT DELIVERED!

Can you keep a secret? Most of us cannot...moi included! I'm just bursting, so here is a sneaky peek at some wonderful quilting on a special project quilt....shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh......

UPDATE: Melissa received her quilt a couple months ago. The blocks were made by member of C-R-A-F-T yahoo group. Once a month or so, we make heart blocks for the heart block bank so that whenever members are experiencing life altering events, one of us will take the blocks and make them into a throw size quilt for our sister to snug in... with all those hearts she knows she is loved! It was my turn to pitch in and make a quilt. I used the altered nine patch block...

The heart blocks measure 6 1/2 " x 6 1/2", so I added coordinating colors....lavendar and purple

6 1/2" x 6 1/2" blocks ....(4) lavendar and (1) purple center block as shown in the picture to form the 9 - patch block. The 9 - patch blocks were cut through the center twice ... shown below...

The blocks were sewn together as it appears in the above picture.....

The ending result....Voila!

Happy February! Welcome to my new blog where most of the time you'll find me working on blocks of the months and quilts and such. It is an attempt to separate the diverse media that I like to work with...but...there will still be links located at the bottom of entries that you may explore that will take you to the up and coming dolls only blog or back to Versana!, the original blog.
In January, I joined a group here on Alicia's blog for a Quilt Block Round Robin 2010. Each month a group of 12 make one to two blocks to be passed through to each member who in turn will make two blocks according to the block designed sent. At the end of the year, we should all have 24 blocks toward the making of our desired quilt. Here is a picture of my blocks! My inspiration is Judy Martin's Shakespeare quilt. Hopefully later in the week, two star blocks will join these; as the quilt will also require additional star blocks!
